We took the train tour. The bridge is just over 2 miles long, and you can walk or bike it for free. To actually go on the island at the end, you have to pay and take the tram. It runs around $25 each (there are some discounts) and it was worth every penny. We got a guided tour of the buildings used by workers who built the original bridge 100 years ago, we got to help feed some of the resident fish after the 1pm tour. There is a lagoon with a spray eel, 2 small sharks, and other fish that come and go. Also, lots of birds. A large white heron that is almost tame, an osprey nest, and many pelicans. The guide gave us a lot of information about the history of the bridges. There are restrooms, a Snack bar, souvenir shop and a museum.
My husband and I enjoyed the little history tour and being able to wander around the little island. We highly recommend everyone walking or riding on 7 mile bridge to stop and check it out. It does cost extra but well worth the price to maintain the integrity of this piece of history.
Awesome experience! First off Julie saved me from having to walk the bridge to Pigeon Key on the train ride and was super friendly. Happy Birthday, Julie. Once on the island CT was our tour guide and the story of Henry Flagler and how the old railroad came to Key West was amazing. Seeing the buildings in such great condition and the massive concrete supports for the railroad and buildings was impressive. I then went to the gift shop where I learned of Fred the Tree. That’s awesome that he is such a celebrity and well taken care of and decorated for the holidays.
Thank you so much for the experience and I hope to return in the future with my granddaughter.
This island is a must see! We took the train over to Pigeon Key and had the guided tour that lasted 2 hours. The history of this island is beyond amazing. We were very fortunate to have Chris as our guide. His knowledge is limitless.
Such a cute little key. Fun afternoon. Packed a lunch. Learned so much about building the 7mile bridge. Got to feed shark. Breathtaking views. Cute little gift shop. Too chilly to swim the day we went. Loved the trolley ride!!
We decided last minute to visit, have always wanted to go. Very enjoyable and somewhat secluded when we were there on a Monday afternoon. Suggest bring water shoes if you’d like to swim or snorkel, the shoreline is rocky in some places. Our tour guide Alec was very familiar with the historical significance and overall excellent. Definitely recommend.
Neat little key with a fascinating history as a work camp for those men building the overseas railway. We took the train tour and although it is a bit pricey, we really enjoyed it. The two-hour tour is about the right length because after you’ve seen all the buildings there’s not a whole lot else to do on the island. Pretty good views of the modern overseas Highway alongside the original.
Loved Pigeon Key and the train saved us non locals from walking the old bridge in the heat
The island has been preserved and maintained perfectly and staff is super friendly and helpful. The driver Julie was awesome and Chris the caretaker and overseer of the wildlife work being done there was fantastic as well! We fished and released while others snorkeled- we could have caught tons if we stayed longer but had tons of fun and think Pigeon Key is a place to see and support- thanks guys!
